Mill Valley Fire Department

The history of Mill Valley’s Fire Department is intricately tied to the history of the town itself. In the early days of settlement in the area, the coastal redwoods were an ideal source of lumber and a big mill began harvesting the wood. Soon word of the beauty of the surrounding area got around and people began to move to the new town of Mill Valley.

There was a huge fire that started on September 19, 1859, which burned without relief for three days. Another fire in 1881 burned away more than 60,000 acres of brush. The Mill Valley fire prevention group started as a volunteer group to prevent future firestorms in town.

The Fire Department has two stations at 26 Corte Madera and 1 Hamilton Drive. There are seven fire fighters on duty at a given time. Four pieces of equipment are used on a shift: two engines, each with capacity for 500 gallons of water, one wild land fire engine, and one command truck.

The Fire Department is in charge of all the fire prevention and safety procedures for the city of Mill Valley. The Department underscores the importance of emergency preparedness. While the area around Mill Valley is nothing short of spectacular, it is also a high risk area for forest fires during the long dry months. The Fire Department website has extensive information on planning for emergencies: how to deal in an earthquake or tsunami, evacuation information, landslides, floods, preparation kits, and a class for emergency preparedness.

With a focus on communications and working together with the many communities in Mill Valley, the Fire Department has a siren system, an automated notification system, and a telephone notification system to inform residents during an emergency.

If there is a life-threatening fire emergency, please call 911. If you need more information about the department or would like to schedule a tour of a fire station, please contact the Fire Department.
