HAYWARD (BCN)

A 71-year-old Oakland woman was killed and four other people were injured in a two-car crash on southbound Interstate Highway 880 in Hayward on Sunday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash was reported at 9:08 a.m. on the highway near Marina Boulevard, according to CHP Officer Leonel Tirona.

A 65-year-old Hayward woman was driving south in a 2004 Chrysler Sebring convertible and lost control of the car, swerving across the highway, the CHP said.

The car struck the front of a 2012 Toyota Prius driven by a 35-year-old Hayward man, killing one of the passengers, identified by the Alameda County coroner's bureau as Nelia Palencia.

Palencia had been seated in the back of the Toyota. Two other passengers and the driver of the Toyota suffered major injuries. They were in intensive care at the hospital later Sunday, Tirona said.

The Chrysler driver suffered minor injuries in the crash, the CHP said.

Alcohol and drugs do not appear to have been a factor in the crash, and the driver of the Chrysler was not arrested. The crash remains under investigation, Tirona said.
