More than a year after East Palo Alto's top cop resigned to take an appointment at the Department of Justice, the city has a new chief of police.
Interim City Manager Carlos Martinez said Tuesday he is hiring former San Francisco cop Albert Pardini to head the East Palo Alto Police Department. Pardini will start work on Nov. 12, Martinez said.
Pardini worked for 32 years in San Francisco and most recently served as the head of the San Francisco International Airport Bureau's patrol division, Martinez said. He's also held leadership positions in San Francisco's Bayview District patrol station, the city's major crimes investigation division, the narcotics and vice crimes division, and the homeland security division, among others.
"East Palo Alto's new chief Albert Pardini brings a remarkably wide range of law enforcement experience to the community," Martinez said in a statement. "We're confident that with his proven leadership and outstanding record of success, he'll generate new and effective solutions to the challenges we face."
East Palo Alto's former police chief, Ronald Davis retired on Nov. 8 last year after Attorney General Eric Holder appointed him as director of the Office of Community Oriented Police Services (COPS) in the Department of Justice.
"As you can imagine, being selected by United States Attorney General Eric Holder to serve in this position and in the Obama Administration is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," Davis said in his resignation letter. "Yet, leaving East Palo Alto is bittersweet as it has been a great honor working for and serving the residents of this great city."
According to a report delivered to the City Council roughly a month before Davis's resignation, crime in East Palo Alto was down 33 percent from 2005 to 2012, including both violent and property crimes.
In 2010, Pardini served as the interim Assistant Chief of Police in San Francisco, with six divisions of the police department and a $450 million budget under his command.
Pardini said he was particularly proud of his development and management of an outreach program and partnership with the San Francisco Unified School District that focused on at-risk youth.
"As a law enforcement professional, reaching out and engaging youth has always been a priority for me, and such early intervention can have dramatic positive effects," Pardini said in a statement. "I'm excited to join this great team, to build upon the impressive reputation of the East Palo Alto Police Department, and to work with the people of this city to reach out shared objectives for a safer, more secure, and healthy community."
Pardini holds an associate degree in Administration of Justice from the City College of San Francisco and a Bachelor's Degree in Human Services from Notre Dame de Namur University. He's also a graduate of the P.O.S.T. Supervisory Leadership Institute and P.O.S.T. Command College.
He serves as an advisory board member for the University of San Francisco's International Institute of Criminal Justice Leadership.
