SAN JOSE (BCN)

A standoff inside a home near a high school in south San Jose ended this morning with the suspect missing, seven children and two adults coming out of the home safe and the school reopening after a lockdown, a police spokeswoman said.

Oak Grove High School, which was ordered closed this morning because of the nearby incident, was opened again for classes as of 9:15 a.m., police Sgt. Heather Randol said.

The standoff began at about 9:45 p.m. Tuesday with a report of a man armed with a firearm and possibly holding a small child who was believed to have entered a home in the area of Larch Grove Place and Hayes Avenue, Randol said.

The incident ended between 8:30 a.m. and 8:45 a.m. today when police entered the home but did not find the suspect, Randol said.

Officers secured the home and found seven children ages 1 to 13 years old and a man and woman, but no suspect, Randol said.

The suspect must have slipped out not long after the first report was received Tuesday night, Randol said.

"It's apparent that he left prior to police getting there," she said.

Police believed that the suspect went into the home Tuesday night and officers surrounded the place throughout the night, Randol said.

Officers were still interviewing the adults inside the home this morning and police are "not sure why they didn't come out" earlier, she said.
