A man was arrested after leading California Highway Patrol officers on a high-speed chase that spanned more than 50 miles and ended in Oakland Tuesday night, CHP officials said.

At approximately 9 p.m., an Oakland CHP officer spotted a red Dodge speeding on westbound Interstate Highway 80 near Gilman Street.

Once the officer attempted to stop the car, it exited off at Gilman Street and went onto eastbound Highway 80.

The pursuit continued to Cummings Skyway on Highway 80, reaching speeds of more than 100 mph, according to the CHP.

A CHP helicopter assisted officers as the Dodge exited and re-entered the freeway multiple times.

The vehicle then exited the freeway and changed directions again to head west on Highway 80 before transitioning to Interstate Highway 580 in Oakland, CHP officials said.

The driver then exited Highway 580 at Seminary Avenue and was pursued on city streets until the suspect attempted to flee on foot from 73rd Avenue and Arthur Street.

The driver, identified as Lateef Omari, 23, of Oakland, was quickly captured by police with the use of a Taser stun gun.

After his arrest, police discovered that Omari was driving an unreported stolen vehicle out of Hercules and that he had three warrants out for his arrest related to false identification, hit-and-run, resisting arrest and other charges.

Omari was booked into jail on his three warrants, along with new offenses including vehicle theft and recklessly evading police, according to CHP officials.
